In this selection of recent paintings, Petrolia artist Ariel Lyons is challenged and inspired by sacred objects and places from the Buddhist temples of Cambodia to church ruins in Ireland. An opening reception will be held on the First Friday, December 5, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and the artist will be present. Join Ariel Lyons for a talk and tour on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. Admission to Gallery Lambton is free.

Sacred sculptures and relics left behind by previous generations stand silently in Buddhist temples, re-constructed in the jewel tone paintings by Ariel Lyons. The gothic ruins with tilting pillars and foundation blocks strewn helter-skelter are the sacred artifacts and physical remnants of spirituality. Lyons has been painting these religious objects and places since a trip to Cambodia in 2004. “My interest is in sacred imagery. The faces and places of the sacred have become a passion. The quest has taken me from Laos and Angkor Watt in Cambodia to Ireland and places closer to home and it is a pursuit that may last a lifetime,” Lyons stated. Lyons is interested in these sacred objects with their latent meaning and their dormant histories and yet she is interested in the on-going presence of spirituality in human kind.
